Service of Remembrance and Hope
Members of Cumbernauld Trinity Parish Church gathered on Sunday 2nd August to mark the first anniversary of the devastating fire that destroyed the congregation's St Mungo's building.
The open-air service, held on the former church site, brought together members of the congregation, local residents and community representatives to give thanks for God's faithfulness over the past year, remember the impact of the fire, and look forward with hope.
Throughout the service, the congregation reflected on the truth that their ultimate hope is not found in bricks and mortar, but in Jesus Christ. While the loss of the building has been deeply felt, the church has continued to worship, serve and witness in the community, confident that Christ remains faithful to his people.
Prayers were offered in thanksgiving for the many individuals, churches and organisations who have supported the congregation over the past year, and for all those who have enabled ministry and community outreach to continue.
A key moment in the service was the reaffirmation of plans to build a new church on the St Mungo's site. The congregation looks forward to creating a building that will be far more than a place of worship—a welcoming centre for the whole community and a beacon of Christ's love, hope and grace in the heart of Cumbernauld.
The Rev. James Gemmell said: "A year ago we stood in shock as we watched our church building burn. Yesterday we stood together on the same ground, not looking back in despair but looking forward in hope. Our confidence is not in a building, but in the risen Christ, who has been faithful to us every step of this journey. We look forward to the day when a new church will stand on this site — a place where people will encounter the love of Jesus Christ, and a beacon of his hope and grace for our whole community."
The service concluded with prayers for the future, asking God's blessing on the rebuilding project and reaffirming the congregation's commitment to serving the people of Cumbernauld. As plans for the new church move forward, the congregation does so with confidence that Christ, who has sustained them through loss, will continue to lead them into a hopeful future.
