St Mungo’s Time Capsule
On 7th November 1964 the foundation stone was laid of St Mungo's Parish Church in Cumbernauld, later to become the St Mungo’s Hub of Cumbernauld Trinity Parish Church. At the same time, a ‘Time Capsule’ was buried in the foundations.
Although the St Mungo’s building was tragically destroyed by fire on 2nd August this year, the 61-year-old Time Capsule was recovered and was opened when Cumbernauld Trinity met for our Café Church service on the afternoon of Sunday 23rd November.
The attached photos show the Time Capsule being opened and some of the contents.
They included two copies of the local newspaper, the Cumbernauld News, one of which intimated the death of the minister of St Mungo’s, only about four weeks before the foundation stone was to be laid, and another containing a front-page notice about the laying of the stone; various Presbytery papers regarding the new building and some ideas from the minister as to the proposed layout; the Congregational Roll of the day; and the (pre-decimal) coins of the era.
It was interesting to note that one of the ‘notices’ pages of the Cumbernauld News in October 1964 listed the Sunday worship services of Cumbernauld Old, St Mungo’s and Kildrum Parish Churches - the three churches that united in August 2024 to form Cumbernauld Trinity.
